The world
today is facing serious dangers. Tens of thousands of nuclear weapons
are deployed around the globe and the control of chemical and biological
armaments is facing many setbacks. New technologies being developed
may lead to advanced weapon systems and the proliferation of long-range
missiles is continuing apace. Additionally, the global community
is witnessing significant shifts in security thinking as a response
to conflict and violence. The revolution in military affairs, concerns
about asymmetrical warfare and the threat of |

terrorism
demand a high priority on many states' security agendas. There is
little agreement on how to react to these trends and threats—unilateral
action has its dangers, but perhaps no more than no action at all.
UNIDIR activities in the area of global security and disarmament
address the contentious issues surrounding international arms
control regimes and the links between disarmament, conflict and
security. Through its research projects, meetings and publications,
the Institute supports the Conference on Disarmament, the General
Assembly and other forums by contributing in-depth, forward-looking
thinking to security dialogues. UNIDIR remains committed to strengthening
arms control regimes after their entry into force through its research
on treaty implementation, verification and compliance.
