| UNIDIR occasionally
hosts visiting fellows for periods up to six months. Sponsored by
their home institution or by their government, visiting fellows
have the opportunity to interact with the UN Secretariat, government
delegations, international organizations and non-governmental institutes,
and contribute to UNIDIR’s wider research programme.
In the past, UNIDIR hosted two special regional fellowship
projects: one on South Asia in 2001, and the other on the Middle
East in 2002. These special fellowships focused on topics of regional
security by selecting four researchers from the region to work in
Geneva for a period of six months. The fellows worked collectively
on a single research paper, focusing on a particular question of
regional security. These special fellowships helped generate regional
cooperation and build confidence by bringing together researchers
who might not have had the opportunity to work collaboratively in
other circumstances.
